Cool Serious recording problems-Any able to help?!?!?

Can anyone suggest a good sound card for recording mixes on to PC with high quality, for around £50-100?

After seeking advice on software I purchased the mixcraft3 package as suggested, however, my mixes still sound filtered and muffled, when playing them back irrespective of the audio settings.

I am pretty sure its because im going from phono/rca output on my mixer to a single microphone input jack (the standard pink one) on a crap sound card does anyone know if this is likely to be the reason?

Also is anyone able to explain why, when I play the music through this same route (from my mixer to my laptop) it sounds fine when listening to it, but after recording the sound is really poor quality regardless of the software used to make the recording?

Cheers, and sorry if I am not very clear in my terminology, my technical knowledge is quite frankly s***.

Microphone = 8bit Mono

The music sounds fine in playback mode because the sounds are coming out of your speakers which are connected to your mixer. The reason your recordings sound pish is because you're recording your mixes in 8bit mono (i think) ??

I bet you have the same connection as me which is a speaker output and microphone/line-in output combo connecter on your laptop?

If you're using the operating system Windows try seeing if you can select Line-In in your audio properties - Start menu >> all programs >> accessories >> entertainment >> volume control

When recording a mix you should also make sure you have Stereo Mix checked - Start menu >> all programs >> accessories >> entertainment >> volume control >> properties >> recording (should you have the option??) If you don't then you should look into getting a better sound

Thumbs Up about to buy a sound card

thanks for your help; that seems logical to me, I think that changing the line in from 8 bit mono via the mic input to a stereo rca/phono input will help, to this end I will probaby get a new sound card....any thoughts on this anyone?

When I'm out and about I use a creative labs Live! 24-bit External usb sound card. It will record in 24Bit 96Khz and because it is usb I can use it with a desktop or laptop. It is nice and cheap ( I got mine for arround £40 ) the sound is pretty good to.
