Default Scratching

This is done by a lot of DJ’s that are in the Urban & Turntablisim scene as well as used by Hardcore DJ's. As the years go by more and more DJ’s put there scratching skills to use in all sorts of genres / styles eg Eddie Halliwell scratches to Techno and even scratches to Trance (now and again!) eg at venues he knows it will go down well at, whether that be using vinyl or using samples on CD Decks etc.

Another great skill that many DJ’s try to master to add something extra to there sets.

Can you scratch? If so, how long did it take for you to pick it up?

i can't scratch for buggery, in fact i've given up trying now i'm so cack at it. Would love to be able to do the whole q-bert/dmc style thing but sometimes you just have to accept that some things aint gonna happen

as you know i use Cd Decks so dont really scratch much. I only very occasionally do to enhance a certain mix or breakdown etc.

I started as Turntablist in the early 90's playing funky house and i used to set up for hours at night trying to find that perfect cut. Scratch is a tool best used discretly , it should always complement the track not stomp it. Since I picked up the Pioneer DVJ-1s I find myself going back to it alot more often , its impressive as hell when people realize that you just chopped and screwed a video live.

i can do basic baby, forward, reverse and tear scratches. but find it very hard to make combos out of them.

would never use them in sets unless i got shit hot at them.

takes alot of practice and skill and to know when to use it to compliment a set. Alot of DJ's overuse scratching, spinbacks etc.
