hello, new member, so be genital. just wondering what we thought of the vestax pmc-280 mixer. basicaly ive had a pioneer djm 500, then swapped to a 600 (wanted to be able to scratch n cut. then got a vestax pcv 185xl wich was ok but i grew to hate. so now im looking at a djm 400, i only use 2 1210's through rane scratch live, so dont need loads of channels, but for about the same money i can get the vestax pmc280 the vestax looks big wich i like against the pioneer, but iirc the pioneer is solid sounds great and is easy to use. BUT for some reason my head is telling me big vestax. whats your view?

the pioneer 400 has a great reputation for a two channel mixer... but vestax are pretty good. Why don't you got to a shop with a bag of tunes (edit - or your laptop) and ask to have a go on both through some good speakers. See which one you prefer and what sounds best??

Personally I have found vestax mixers to be a bit ropey in terms of quality, and would always say Pioneer over vestax, but you mentioned your into a bit of turntablism, which is a whole different ball game. Pioneer mixer crossfaders even on the sharpest curve setting do not really have a sharp enough curve for decent scratching, so in this case I would personally say go vestax. There are other options though which are more suited to scratching, numark make some good scratch mixers like the DXMpro just as an example, obviously if you could afford to get a rane I think that would probably be the ultimate....

went down to the local dj shop, i spent an hour messing on both mixers and have come away with the vestax. loads better than the pioneer in my opinion. cueing on the pioneer was pretty bad ![]() the vestax sounds nicer and the faders are great. the only thing the pioneer was better at is the phaser, it sounded better, but the vestax has band pass filters and lots more effects so easily out weighed that. also the pioneer has auto bpm instead of tap, but 3 taps and its done on the vestax, plus you can tap out of time and create to weird effects. both have good enough fader curves for what i want to do scratchin wise, but the vestax was for me. thanks for your advise chaps

Glad you did the sensible thing and tried them both side by side before buying ! BUT: The pioneer djm600 has tap tempo for the bpm counters. The djm600 in MY opinion sounds better than a vestax lol also the cueing is awesome on the pioneer (djm600). I have not tried a djm400. The djm500 was poor as the cue channel did not had a knob to fade between master/cue channels, instead it had eq for the heaphones (what fkin use is that !). So yes the djm500 is a pile of shyte imo. Can you replace the upfaders just like you can the crossfaders on the vestax ? You can on the pioneer djm600 ! I think the pioneer has much better build quality too, but, like I say, I am glad you have tried them and made a rational choice ![]() Happy mixing / scratching buddy !!! |

Vestax are nice, but I'd probably go with Pioneer. Pioneer are a rip off though with most products.

i have been having some more fun with her today and i know i have made the right decision. mixer is spot on. the faders feel great. the ups arnt externally replacable like on the djm600 but i never use the up faders so they should never go bust. i know what you mean about build quallity on vestax stuff as ive had a vmc185 before and it wasnt too crakin. but this pmc-280 is easily as well made as a pioneer, its built like a tank rock solid. anyone considering then go for it one happy chap here ![]()
