| Hope to take you from the Shire to Mordor and back to the Shire with this post... ![]() It seems quite obvious that the Universe uses numbers in patterns. Whether or not the analysis of these number patterns is accurate is up for debate. There are many interesting 'games' that can be played with numbers and much of it is absurd. But, some of the numeric relationships are interesting in science. Here is some information for your examination and how the number eight correlates to trance music’s 4/4 or 8 scale. The number EIGHT literally means to make fat or super-abound, to go above and beyond or perfect completeness. It is seven plus one, indicating perfection plus one, which is unity, making eight the super-abounding number. A new beginning, commencent, or accumulation. The number eight is always the first in a new series. Eight also deals with regeneration and resurrection. Here are a few things I came across while looking at the number eight. In Science The atomic number of oxygen. It takes eight minutes for light to reach the Earth. The number of allotropes of carbon. In physics, the second magic number. In particle physics, the eightfold way is used to classify sub-atomic particles. All spiders, and more generally all arachnids, have eight legs. An octopus has eight tentacles. The most stable allotrope of a sulfur molecule is made of eight sulfur atoms arranged in a rhombic form. In Astronomy As of 2006, in our solar system, eight of the bodies orbiting the Sun are considered to be planets. In Religion The Jewish religious rite of brit milah is held on a baby boy's eighth day of life. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday that starts on the 25th day of Kislev. The Noble Eightfold Path in the Buddhist faith has eight steps. The Eight Immortals are Chinese deities. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that humans are responsible for their actions by the age of 8. Before that age, children lack sufficient knowledge to commit sin and are therefore exempt from judgment for their actions. The Dharmachakra, a Buddhist symbol, has eight spokes. In Scientology, there are 8 dynamics of life. The eighth dynamic represents the Infinity, or God. Noah was the eight person from Adam. David was the eight son of Jesse. Circumcision is performed on the eighth day. In the Bible, Jesus appeared in His resurrected body on the first day of the week which is on the eight day. There were eight people on Noah's Ark. In Superstition & Psychology In tarot, card No. 8 is "Strength." Eight is considered a lucky number in Chinese culture because it sounds like the word "prosper" or "wealth" 8-Circuit Model of Consciousness is a heuristic model of consciousness proposed by Timothy Leary. In some ways reminiscent of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs, Leary believed the mind is best viewed as a collection of 8 "circuits", also called "gears" or "mini-brains". Each stage represents a higher stage of evolution than the one before it. Leary presented a physical model based on the right/left sides of the brain, but he had no supporting evidence of this distinction. The first four levels, which Leary presumed to reside in the left lobe of the cerebrum, are concerned with the survival of organisms on earth; the other four, which Leary suggested are found in the right lobe, are for use in the future evolution of humans, and remain dormant in the majority of human beings. In Astrology Scorpio is the 8th astrological sign of the Zodiac. In the middle ages, 8 was the number of "unmoving" stars in the sky, and symbolized the perfection of incoming planetary energy. In Music A note played for one-eighth the duration of a whole note is called an eighth note, or quaver. An octave, the interval between two notes with the same letter name (where one has double the frequency of the other), is so called because there are eight notes on a western scale between the two, including the notes themselves. There are seven notes of the scale (the eighth being the repetition of the first). So this brings us to trance music’s “4-to-the-floor". When you are counting those beats out in your head when mixing is there something larger going on? I hope so. I believe so. At a certain point you no longer need to count, you just feel it when the music is coming in or going out. Since the dawn of man, music has played an extremely important part of our development psychologically and socially. From beating of the drums in a small tribe in Africa to the pounding house beat and a large trance party, music effects our mood and conscious. The trance beat does evoke a since of rebirth for me. Perhaps the beat reminds us of a primordial time in our ancestor’s history. Maybe the soothing repetition of trance reminds each of us of our mother’s heartbeat when we were in there womb. One thing is for certain, trance is the most sublime, divine, advanced music genre known to man, representing a quantum leap in artistic creativity analogous to the development of the frontal lobe in the human brain. Trance is a new day, a new beginning. |
