please if you mean 'electro house' (which isn't really a genre imo) don't call it just electro cause they are worlds apart

well the genre name 'electro house' is a fairly new thing and a lot of people have jumped on the bandwagon, but i don't see the music as being particularly new. There has always been house music with dirty electro lines and analogue synths it's just been lumped in with other sub-genre's of house.

I don't see why it suddenly needs a new name for people to wank over, guess it's just a shrewd marketing trick

Surely it can only be a good thing that it now has a genre to fall into. It makes no odds to me, i've been playing it since way before it became so widely popular, i can't see why its a bad thing being classified as "electro house", let people call it what they want, the people who are proper dance heads who truly care about proper dance music will still be into it regardless of how people classify it, people can please themselves

i think less is more when it comes to genre names: there is house music and techno music - that works for me

Sub genres are there because music styles merge together, and when these merges get popular they need a name as the people want to know what they are listening to.

I think sub genres are a good thing imo

They help to define what people are looking for and enjoy more

Well I think that they are neccasary, if there wasnt such a broad scale of dance music then there wouldnt be any so I think its a good thing to have a larger scale and different catorgaries to place them in, even though most tracks cross multiple genres these days

i think they are useful to some extent but i think the more there are the less useful they become. When i first started playing i always said i played acid techno - that's what i looked for in record shops, that was my bag. As the years go on i have found myself discovering and playing all sorts of other techno (often in the same set) and as people asked me what i played i found it increasingly more difficult to define (well it's kinda tribal-funky-hard-dirty-acid techno with minimal-electro undertones and a breakbeat twist) so now i just say i play techno and that's how i feel about it. I think if i'd just stuck to the acid techno i'd have missed out on a hell of a lot of good music and good experiences. I find myself thinking that it's all just techno really.

Also i don't really feel like there's many new sub-genres emerging at the moment in dance music (dubstep being the obvious exception) and that essentially many of the new sub-genre's i.e. electro house are just repackaging an old product in order to increase sales. Put some spin on it, get a few superstar dj's to bandy the term around a bit and wahey you've created a bandwagon to sucker all the followers of fashion into believing they need to jump on board. (i'm not pointing the finger at anyone btw).

I guess i just think that whatever kind of dj you are all these little sub genre's are encouraging you to think inside ever decreasing boxes. I always thought the whole idea of music was to think outside the box......

So really like you say its undefinable, but they do help me when looking for tunes

Default electro

I think the electro scene is being pushed forward by the scene in Miami particularly producers like Robbie Rivera and juicy records.

I can see this type of music doing well i will be interesting to see what type of music dominates the winter festival this year.

Must buy electro tunes
