Default The Fruity Thread

I have seen this done on other forums and I think we should have it too, instead of posting random threads about fruityloops questions just post them in here. Post any links to tutorials, any advice you can give, any questions you have about it and someone might have the answer.

I'll get this started, How do you get a good sounding kickdrum out of fruity, what methods do you use? Obvious answer is to use good sounding samples but what about compression, eq etc?

oo well it all starts with good samples yer

i usually use fruity compressor and compress the kick with a ratio of around 6:1 with a threshold of around-13db, attack setting of around 5ms and as short a release time as i can get without any pumping effects

use the parametric EQ to cut the lower frequencies of the kick, around 50-90hz should clean it up nicely and maybe something around the 200hz mark to leave space for some bass

dont adjust the kick levels (or any levels for that matter) in the step sequencer, assign the channel to an fx track and use the mixer levels instead as its easier and quicker to get everything sitting right

i posted this up a little while back on another forum, it will help you get a nice interesting sound out of your snare drums

Quote:
Rather than boosting your snare's frequencies with EQ try this instead

load up a decent snare sample in the step sequencer and assign it to a mixer channel

add a 3xosc and layer it up with the snare drum, generate a noise wave and turn the other 2 osc down

in the 3xosc INS tab (vol envelope) cut the attack hold sustain and release to 0, you wanna keep a short decay time (i have had good results by adding the smallest amount of delay at times, i have found it can add body to a snare sound)

apply a band pass to the 3xosc, add some reso to make it sharper and tweak both parameters till you get a sound that grabs your attention

apply the 3xosc to the same mixer channel

now compress and EQ them as you wish to tie them both together, add a touch of reverb

you can mess about the the volume of the 3xosc, and all the filter parameters to get different sounds and effects

try it, it works

yeh mate, just add your audio clip to the bottom of the playlist as you would...look on the top left of the playlist...on the top bar there should be a knife icon...this is the cut tool...press it to activate it

then go to your audio clip on the bottom of the playlist and drag the knife upwards on your audioclip to slice it into the pieces you want...then click on the paintbrush near the knife and just right click what you dont want in the audio clip to get rid of it...

hope this helps

well if you add an audio clip in fl it goes into the bottom section of the playlist (thats where you arrange all your patterns to make a song)

thats where you also edit the audio clips, chop them up, loop them over etc etc. to fit in with your song you just made

to add an audio clip go to the playlist and click the bottom section (with the paint tool selected)..a window will open up saying "open sound file(s)" just choose the audio clip you want to add and it will put it in there automatically for you to edit the way i said before

A cool thing I found in fruity is the gating effect on strings:

- Go to the browser - go to packs - strings - strings patch 2 and right click to send to selected channel or new channel
- right click on the string patch in the step sequencer and go to insert - 3x osc
- left click on the strings patch and it will bring up the channel settings - in the fx section (--) move it so it displays 1 (goes to mixer channel 1)
- do the same with the 3x osc but change it to 2
- right click on the strings patch in the step sequencer and select Piano Roll
- make a chord sequence - an example to try is this:

C5, D#5, G5 for 2 bars
C5, D#5, G#5 for 2 bars
A#4, D5, F5 for 2 bars
A#4, D#5, G5 for 2 bars

(click the little abc button to see the note names)

it will look like this

- go into the 3x and right click and go into the piano roll and make a 8 bar long note on any key

- Press Alt+U to open the chopper window and click the folder icon and find "6 notes 2" and click open then click the tick box

- now go into the mixer (press F9) and go to and select channel 2 - to the right of the mixer click the small arrow beside 1 and select a Peak controller from the list

- Go back into the strings patch by left clicking on it in the step sequencer - this brings the channel settings up - go to the INS tab
- In the filter section - right click on the cut knob and select link to controller - another window will appear - select under internal controller select peak (ctrl 3x osc) Peak and hit accept

- Play back the sequence and move the BASE and VOL controls on the Peak Controller - Notice it starts to Gate -

Gunna keep this thread open.

Here's the project for my entry in a competition over at The Flipside, it's a breakbeat track. You're gunna need the latest version of FL to open it (Fl7).

Enjoy!
