Default Redrum Tutorial for Reason 3

Redrum Tutorial for Reason 3

Here is a tutorial on how to get good sounding drums out of the redrum, good for trance but also good for other genres as well

Firstly open an empty rack, whack the tempo up to 140 (Well that bits up to you )

Loading the devices

Create a Mixer 14:2

Holding [Shift] Create a redrum device

Also holding [Shift] Create a M-Class Compressor

Do the above twice more till you get 3 Compressor devices

Name the 1st Compressor device Bassdrum, the 2nd Snare and the 3rd Clap

Holding down [Shift]again create a RV7000 Reverb Unit, name this device Clapverb

Create another Mixer 14:2, name this mixer Drums

Press Tab to see the back

Routing the devices

Wire Redrum channel 1s outputs to The Bassdrum Compressors Audio input and remove the R cable (as we only need this to be in Mono) Wire the outputs of the compressor device to Channel 1 of the drums mixer.

Wire Redrum Channel 2s outputs to the Snare Compressors Audio input and also remove the R cable. Wire the outputs of the compressor device to Channel 2 of the drums mixer.

Wire Redrum Channel 3s Output to the Clap Compressor Audio Input but keep both cables intact this time also wire the Clap Compressors Audio Outputs to the Audio Input on the RV7000. Wire the outputs of the RV7000 device to Channel 3 of the drums mixer.

Wire the Stereo Out of the Redrum to Mixer Channel 4 on the Drum Mixer.

Wire the Master Out of the Drums Mixer to the MAIN mixers channel 1 input that you created at the beginning.

Press Tab to see the front again

Setting Up the devices

On the Bass Drum Compressor do the following settings

Input Gain: 8.3db Threshold: -22.4db Ratio: 2:23:1 Attack: 52ms Release: 266ms Output Gain: -3.8db

On the Snaredrum Compressor do the following settings

Input Gain: 3.4db Threshold: -36.0db Ratio: 40:3:1 Attack: 89ms Release: 93ms Output Gain: -3.8db

On the Clap Compressor do the following settings

Input Gain: 11.3db Threshold: -24.1db Ratio: 2:46:1 Attack: 7ms Release: 318ms Output Gain: -2.6db

On the Clap RV7000 Reverb Unit do the following settings

Reverb – Algorithm: Plate Dry/Wet Control: 38

Turn Gate Enable on and Switch to Gate edit mode and Change the Threshold Setting to -3.7db

Setting up the drum samples

Go back to the Redrum and load a good sounding kick drum/bassdrum sound into Redrum Channel 1, lower the level on that redrum channel to 80 and the length to 67.

Load a snare sample into Redrum Channel 2, lowering the level to 83 and the length to 52 and also the tone to -18

Load a clap sample into Redrum Channel 3, lowering the level to 60 and the length to 64.

Load a closed hihat into Redrum Channel 8, lowering the level to 35 and the length to 64.

Load a open hihat into redrum Channel 9, lowering the level to 80 and the length to 70.

Load any other samples you wish

Turn Channel 8 + 9 Exclusive on in the Redrum.

Programming a simple pattern

With the select button on the Redrum select the Bassdrum Channel (1) and program a 4/4 pattern on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13

Select the Clap channel (3) on the redrum and program hits on steps 5 and 13

Select the Closed hihat channel ( 8 ) and program hits on steps 1,4,6,9,12 and 14

Select the Open Hihat channel (9) and program hits on 3, 7, 11, and 15

Now you should have a Compressed Dance Beat going.

Optional

If you want to save this for use in other songs, click on the redrum, hold down [shift] and click on all the compressors, the reverb unit and the Drum Mixer so that they all have a line round them and right click and select combine, this creates a combinator patch which you can then save, you will need to hit tab to wire the drum mixers master out back to the main mixers channel when you do this.

i think it's one of the easiest bits of sequencing software to get the hang of to be honest (compare it to cubase or logic), it's a really neat little program to start out on i love the way everything is laid out like hardware
