Default What software do you use to split a mix into tracks etc?

I would like to make a demo soon - maybe a 3hr Trance mix (All Styles!!)

So I'd proberly end up having 3 CD's
I would then like to split each mix into tracks for each of the 3 CD's.

Never done it before so I thought I'd give it a go.

I've been DJ'ing for nearly 4 years now (on and off) I haven't once sent a demo out yet

About time I start sending some demo's out that will more than likely be next year though after I have got used to the new set up that I should be getting by the end of the year (hopefully!)

Still no time like the present an all that - would be good to start making CD's etc

Which software do others use etc?

SONY SoundForge is what you need. I use it for recording my mixes, but you can also cut up the tracks like you want to, and quite easy to do when Karlos is around lol.

But yeah go for SoundForge or Cool Edit Pro, SoundForge is the better of the two in my opinion.

a lot of people on bangingtunes.com when this has been discussed tend to use soundforge or wavelab(i think).

Yeah soundforge is the better option - if you have it but you can also get a hold of audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

But to split the tracks in soundforge (if you want to) is this:

- Load the mix in (doh)
- at the beginning on the mix press M on the keyboard to insert a marker
- find the part you want the next tune to start (track 2, 3 etc) and hit enter to pause it there and then hit M again to insert another - keep doing this for all your tunes
- go right to the end of the mix and insert another marker (M)
- Once you've done them all go to the Special Menu - Regions/List - Markers to Regions and say yes to the box that comes up
- Then go to Tools - Extract Regions and make sure all the regions are selected - then choose a folder for them to go by clicking browse below and click Extract
- Job done - ur mix will be cut into seperate tracks

The way you split tracks in Sound Forge is pretty similar to way you do it in Nero Wave Editor ,,, I checked.

I'll try Nero Wave Editor first, if no go with that I'll get Sound Forge - can't go wrong with that as you have explained exactly how to split the tracks using that programme

Nice one - I'll look into it more

I do a small fade in and fade out on each region after seperating them, about 10ms or so, just in case you cut it right in the middle of a peak.

Another tip is to cut on the zero cross line - the middle line - find an area where both are meeting the zero cross line (you'll have to zoom in a bit to find the exact bit)

u can use goldwave too, its free just google it (need to download the LAME encoder for mp3s)

all u do with that is play ur mix through pressing ctrl=Q (u dont need one at the start) then u go to the cue menu and it automatically splits the file into smaller tracks and outputs them for cd-ready wavs...

easy as

ive just got my mix sorted with track marks using adobe auditiion (1.5). It took me a while, but now ive got it sorted it should only take me less than 30 mins each mix.

question for you guys: what level (in db) do you normalize your mix to before you burn it/mp3 it? im trying to get the level the same as your average cd you buy in the shops

cheers

Woah 30mins? how long are your mixes?.. usually takes me 5mins at most for a 70min mix with what I use

As for normalising, I wouldnt do that too much because you need to be practicing getting your levels correct throughout your mix anyway, without software aid. But if you want it for demo purposes you can use mp3gain to round the whole thing off at around -4.0db (96.0) should be about right

well, the mix was 17 tracks (80 mins) and 30mins includes burn time, normalizing...etc

i try to keep the level of the tracks as close as possible while mixing, i record into my pc at a low level to avoid any clipping, then normalize the level of the whole file up at the end. I find (in audition) i have to to go over 0db to get the level of the mix the same as bought cds, which dosent seem right as once ive done the normalize and play the track in audition the clip meters start flashing (Not that i can hear anything audible)
perhaps its just audition being super fussy.

Default help here please

hello there members. DJ Greg KA Kolombia is back. But technoloy is holding me back a bit.
I made a 45 minute mixed cd in a ZOOm 8 track multitrack recorder. I thought by seting marks on the mix, it would make separate tracks on the cd. However, i find now that i cant forward or rewind the cd when i play it in a cd player.
Is there a software where i can rip or load my mixed cd and make splits without putting clips, pops, or empty spaces between trackst?
I heard a lot about a program called MixSplitter. The problem is that it does not load the cd into it. Rather it looks for wav files, which i dodnt know how to work with. Good thing it was free.
I read here about goldwave and soundforge. But do they load a cd into them ?
I want a software where i can just load my cd and split. PLease help.

Hi there D666. thanks for replying. A little more help please.
Are you saying that i will need to buy a software that rips audio and transforms it into wave files and then get a progam like soundforge?
I thought by putting the cd in windows media player and then transfer it into a spliting software program would do the job.
What program should i get for this wave conversion?
Please help.
