As for mixer choice most people would say go gold and get a expensive mixer.
Behringer do a nice 4 channel micer the DJX700 looks alot like a Pioneer DJM600

i reckon it's worth learning the slightly harder way and learning about levels at the same time. The amount of dj's i come accross that don't understand levels very well is amazing and it makes such a difference to the quality of the sound through the soundsystem.

I don't really understand what you mean about resetting gains because i reset each gain for every tune i play beacause different records have different loudnesses due to different pressing processes and cd's are recorded at different levels
