OK i think i can help here....what you want are some nice pads (sine waves and squares are the obvious choice) so id go for sytrus for that if you have it and can use it, you can get some great ambient pads and things for that

you want a stereo enhancer effect on those pads, bit of reverb and delay and it should be sounding quite nice and wide, you could add an automation clip to sytrus' filter, and slowly open it up so it slowly builds and builds

you could introduce a nice new synth on the breakdown, and do the same with the filters so it builds and builds (sytrus and the ts404 can get you nice simple synths which are appropriate for breakdowns and plucked sounds)

you can also automate the pitch of synth so it gets higher and higher

i use sytrus for about 80% of my synths because its that versatile its all i need

effects wise your looking at stereo enhancer, delay, reverb and EQ mainly to merge it all in together, you want your instruments on seperate mixer channels, with delay and reverb on each

you want something thats gunna chill you out at the beginning and then start to build and build till you cant take it anymore an then WHAM the beats back in....

hope this helps, if you want me to show you some stuff just pm me and i'll make some examples for ya and show you how its done

lataz good luck

EDIT: you can also add a snare roll, panning effects and a chorus effect to get soem really interesting sounds

ANOTHER EDIT: breakdowns usually last about 16-32 bars, dont make it too long or it will get boring ( sorry if thats insulting your intelligence a little i dno how much you know)

sorry mate lol

ok so your basic breakdown consists of 3 things

1)strings - you can dwnload some stringed instrument samples and use them, or you can use presets from FLs 3xosc instrument...either way you just use the piano roll to create a basic string section

2)synths - your basic breakdown usually has a few bleeps and other dancey sounds in it, you want the 3xosc or the ts404 up for these, load up some of the presets it has and mess about with them (use the piano roll to make a tune with it)

3)filters - most breakdowns have some sort of filter work in them, they are used to start the breakdown with soft/low sounds and end with loud bright sounds when the beat comes back, use the fruity free filter and play about with the "freq" setting on that

so if i wanted to make a simple breakdown i would

a)get some stringy sounds either from the 3xosc synth or downloaded samples, i would put a few long notes (about 4-8 bar notes) into the piano roll for the strings, they would play right the way through your breakdown

b)get some nice bleeps and sounds you can make a melody with, make a melody in the piano roll and have this melody playing right the way through the breakdown too

c)go in FLs effects section and add a free filter to the melody you just created, you want to "automate" the "freq" knob so it starts off low and finishes at the end of the breakdown on full

if you dont understand some of this i can only suggest looking through the FL help file to get more familiar with the programme, find out where the effects panel is, how to add an automation clip, how to add filters and how to use FLs synths (ts404 and 3xosc).

if your struggling just keep "pestering" me lol i will help ya out as best i can, add me on msn if you have it i could help you a lot quicker there

hope this is a lil more helpul

seeya
